This is an audiovisual clip of a live performance of the song by the talented Los Angeles-based violinist-vocalist Sudan Archives. Born as Brittney Denise Parks in Cincinnati, Ohio, and trained in classical music, she is greatly influenced by the music of western and northeastern Africa, especially the traditional Sudanese fiddle playing styles, as well as genres like R&B and electronica. An imaginative blend of traditional folk elements with an experimental electronic sound is the signature of Sudan Archive's music.
This version of 'Paid' is a classic example of that. According to one critic, the sound of 'Paid' reminds one of the British trip-hop music of Massive Attack or Portishead. Although the similarities are there, Sudan Archive's first EP album, ('Paid' is a single from the album) presents a uniquely refreshing soundscape. In 'Paid', an imprint of the western African musical tradition is much clear. This live version of 'Paid', which is recorded and released by Radio Nova, begins with a hypnotic narration of the story of Oshun and the divine feminine by none other than Luisah Teish. From there the song takes one on an enchanting and quite mystical musical journey.
The drum beats are absolutely intoxicating, the vocalizations and the harmonies are enthralling. The hallucinogenic appeal of the track is much increased by the sharp electric ukulele leads and chords played by the artist herself. The song has a true power to uplift one's state of mind closer to nirvana. The funky strings beautifully contrast and complement the deep and echoed rhythm of the drums and the bass. The video of this live version of 'Paid' shows how comfortable the artist is in making her music. Here she is seen performing the song at the cafe like a real lone maverick, armed with just her electric uke and a Roland SP-404 sampler. Watch her create magic with the song and dance to its groovy rhythms.
