Seeing experimental indie rock/pop band Japanese Breakfast on mainstream talk show 'Jimmy Kimmel Live' is a much needed pick me up in these testing times. Filmed at the Sellersville Theater in Pennsylvania, Japanese Breakfast (aka Michelle Zauner) put in an awe-inspiring performance of her divine song "Paprika" off her latest album Jubilee.
As the hazy, low lights hit Zauner, you can feel a sense of unshakeable control and confidence in her craft. Like any trendsetting alternative artist (like Kate Bush or Bjork), Zauner has a sense of effortless power and command over the stage and the hypnotically engaged audience, as she begins a transcendent visual and listening experience.
As she starts to beautifully sing, "How's it feel to be at the center of magic?" amongst a potent blast of horns and a driving marching band like-snare drum, Japan Breakfast let it be known this is a performance you won't forget in a hurry, as the song builds up with the efficacious horn section to a euphoric fanfare.
A track of such enchanting beauty like "Paprika" needs a grandiose arrangement to do it such justice live, and Japanese Breakfast achieves this superbly by performing with 9 musicians on stage, including 2 drummers, and a giant gong, that Zauner hits with captivating conviction. A significant point worth making is that despite all these instruments and chaos, Zauner is never drowned out, and in fact, her astonishing vocals soar through breathtakingly, a testament to her incredible talent.
This is all justly supported by the stunning aesthetics with glistening lights, Zauner's eye-catching ruff type doll dress, and compelling stage presence forming a cocktail of elegance.
With such performances in mainstream media, in front of a broader audience, hopefully, Japanese Breakfast can finally get the full recognition they so richly deserve.
