Before the World Was Listening
There is something particular about encountering an artist just before the larger culture catches up.
In 1995 and 1996, around the arrival of his self-titled debut and the slow ascent of “Barely Breathing,” Duncan Sheik belonged to that moment. TaoNoise, the sister publication that preceded ipropaganda, was among the independent publications documenting that first wave—when Sheik was still emerging as an unusually introspective singer-songwriter rather than the established composer he would become.
“Barely Breathing” eventually traveled far beyond that early circle. What sounded intimate and almost fragile became an enduring record of the era. And Sheik kept traveling, too—from singer-songwriter to composer, from alternative pop to the theater, ultimately helping reshape Broadway through Spring Awakening.
Looking back, what matters about those early pages is not that we caught someone before he became famous.
It is that we caught the beginning of a voice.
And for a brief moment, TaoNoise was there to listen before much of the world was.
