Pioneering trip-hop producer and rapper Tricky is back with his debut album under the alias "Lonely Guest". The self-titled record features the late Lee "Scratch" Perry, plus appearances from Idles' Joe Talbot, Maxïmo Park's Paul Smith, Marta, Oh Land, Breanna Barbara, and many more. The collaborative album is full of Tricky's trademark ominous beats; furthermore, because of the collusive nature of the album's structure, you can hear an extensive amount of differing styles and arrangements throughout.
Far removed from a standard Tricky record (hence the alias title), it's an assemblage of distinctive musical voices, with Joe Talbots unique songwriting and vocals, the grunge stylings of Marta, the Sade-Esque soul contribution of Oh Land, or the powerful storytelling of rapper Kway being prime examples. Such contrasting musical styles and ideologies, impeccably convened together, really gives "Lonely Guest" a bold and diverse statement, even more, impressive that time after time (26 years after his debut album "Maxinquaye"), Tricky can still effortlessly bring soul, rock, hip hop, reggae, and punk themes together. Akin to his infamous early records, it even feels at times like "Lonely Guest" is a homage to Trickys early work, a hark back to his raw formative work, with its rich myriad of influences. "Lonely Guest" was put together by Tricky over an 18 months period during Covid, and you can really feel the thoughtfulness and labor of love poured into the record. The result is a pulsating and engaging listen from start to finish with this album.
Regarding the process behind "Lonely Guest", Tricky stated, "I realized with this album that it was like having space. It's a kind of freedom. I realized I could do whatever the fuck I wanted".
