Introduction
FKA twigs transforms the stage into a living work of art on the Paris leg of her EUSEXUA tour, where music, movement, and visuals collide in a captivating performance of EUSEXUA, Perfectly and Drums of Death.
The Story
Since the dawn of her career over a decade ago, British multidisciplinary FKA twigs has always strived for genre-bending music and high-concept visuals, centred on bold exploration of body and movement. And the recently released Eusexua, her third album — a sacred psalm to the therapeutic power of the dancefloor — is no exception.
Performing at the renowned Le Zénith in Paris, FKA twigs magnificently elevated her artistry to new realms. Positioned somewhere between a concert, a contemporary dance composition, and a thought-provoking club night, the EUSEXUA tour fearlessly defies convention, leaving audiences spellbound by her daring, experimental approach to art.
A wonderful gallimaufry of concert, rave, and performance art, the show features a central steel cube that transforms throughout the set — a dynamic centrepiece around which the performance unfolds.
The colossal three-act extravaganza is broken down into Act I: The Practice, Act II: State of Being and Act III: The Pinnacle. The three-part structure works brilliantly, creating a distinct narrative flow and letting Twigs loose to showcase her mastery, which empowers a truly immersive, transcendental experience.
Her performance of the new tracks “EUSEXUA / Perfectly / Drums of Death” serves as the perfect illustration of her bold, mesmerising talent. Taking place at the beginning of Act II: State of Being, it sees the classically trained FKA suspended upside down in a chain swing, her robust, expressive physicality contorted and masochistically stretched. She seamlessly glides into “Perfectly”, an uptempo, experimental club gem — now donning a new jacket and hood, signaling a shift in energy and intent.
The sequence climaxes with the incredible percussive workout of “Drums of Death”, showcasing FKA at her most aggressive and primal. This performance encapsulates the very best of FKA twigs: avant-garde visuals, intricate choreography, and moments of raw, ephemeral emotion.
Witnessing a Twigs live performance is truly a metaphysical experience; it is nigh on impossible to avert your eyes from her hypnotic form, her talent commands, even demands absolute attention from any onlooker. And she knows this all too well — and she toys with the audience, wrapping them effortlessly around her finger.
Imperceptibly, this is all part of the show, and what makes FKA Twigs such an immersive performer, as she intentionally interplays between artist and spectator, and masterfully blurs the lines between control and surrender.
FKA twigs has rightly cemented her place as the queen of avant-pop — and judging from the EUSEXUA tour, she won’t be relinquishing her crown any time soon.
