Pink Noise by Laura Mvula

Laura Mvula

Pink Noise is the third studio album by British singer-songwriter Laura Mvula. Regarding the record, Mvula stated, "it's the one I've always wanted to make" and described it as "made with warm sunset tones of the '80s".

And she is not wrong. The 10 track album Pink Noise is filled with infectious 80s-influenced dance-pop soundscapes; this is refined, sensual, dynamic pop music. It is impossible to not dance along to, impossible not to make you feel empowered and let all your worries go for 38 glorious minutes.

The highly esteemed classically trained singer has built a respected reputation in the music industry with her neo-soul inspired 2 previous albums, resulting in two Mercury Prize nominations as well as being the recipient of an Ivor Novello award. But has also come with affliction, as she was unceremoniously dropped by RCA Records in 2016.

So such a dramatic artistic comeback, having overcome such adversity, is quite the perilous feat by Mvula, but it certainly has paid off, as she has reinvented herself with Pink Noise. It's not just the music that has changed; Mvula is back with a new look, as she rocks a hightop fade hairstyle and 80's influenced huge shoulder pads (think Grace Jones at the apex of the decade).

It has seen Laura Mvula elevated from a gospel singer to a worldwide divaesque superstar, quite the transformation! As she channels her inner Janet Jackson and Whitney Houston with great vigour and to outstanding results.

One of the greatest compliments you could give Pink Noise is that all 10 tracks could seamlessly pass as singles, as they centre on contagiously upbeat dance-oriented grooves, powerful drums, Princesque guitar riffs, and bright electronics in typical catchy 80's style; this is in huge part thanks to the sonic palette that is co-producer Dann Hume. Who, despite the heavy 80s ethos, still manages to make Pink Noise sound fresh and authentic. The instrumentation and production are stunningly complimented by Mvula angelic soprano voice. Her vocals especially soar through tracks such as 'Safe Passage' and the title track 'Pink Noise.'

The lead single "Got Me" is an unapologetically sassy nod to Michael Jackson and destined to be a dance floor classic. Her collaboration with legendary guitarist Nile Rodgers on the track 'Overcome' sees Mvula most confident and joyous work to date. She also makes another unexpected collab with Simon Neil of rock band Biffy Clyro on the powerful ballad "What Matters".

All in all, Pink Noise is a massive personal victory in Laura Mvula's musical rebirth, a redemption of her passed label dropping. With the album, she has pained a rich tapestry of her past, present, and bright prospects of tomorrow. It's empowering, emotional, uplifting, vulnerable, fearless, candid, and so much more. Laura Mvula is back, better than ever, and with the future in the palm of her hand.
