Dorian Electra - Flamboyant

Dorian Electra - Flamboyant

Dorian Electra is back with their queer, electro-pop music video ‘Flamboyant’

The music video for Dorian Electra’s latest single ‘Flamboyant’ is an acid trip to an extravagant visual and sonic world of queer aesthetics. The color palette is dominated by dazzling golden, white and red; the track is highly addictive electro-pop music that provokes one to sway their body in rhythm.

Produced by the New York-based queer artist ABSRDST and co-directed by Electra and Weston Allen, the music video is a tribute to the great American pianist and entertainer Liberace. The costumes which Electra wears in the video and the flashy, ornately decorated scenes are said to be inspired by the classic baroque aesthetics of Liberace. The spectacular visuals in the video are matched by music that is exquisitely chaotic and exuberant. With its fearless lyrics, enchanting vocals mixed with robotic distortions, groovy drum loops, and generous use of J-pop synth chords, the song takes pop music to its next level.

Very much like their previous tracks, Electra’s new single aims to take down the repressive heteronormative order of our society. With lines like ‘Don’t tell me what to do/ Don’t tell me what to say/ You know I like it loud/ ‘Cause that’s the only way, the song has every potential to become the new anthem of gender fluidity and LGBTQ struggles. The constantly shifting scenes in the video, the ever-transforming nature of Electra’s vocal, their different costumes and looks – all add up to the notion of fluidity that the music video seeks to celebrate.

The song is unapologetic in making fun of the dominant masculine ego which made the societal norms. According to Electra, the lyrics are a ‘self-aware satire of the hypocrisy that boxes in queer artists who are, more often than not, defined by their ‘flamboyance.’’ The ‘Flamboyant’ is true, as one critic has put it, ‘theatrical, cinematic, powerful, and unabashedly queer’, and undoubtedly Dorian Electra’s best till date.
