Andy Fletcher dead: Depeche Mode founding member and keyboardist dies aged 60

Andy "Fletch" Fletcher, who for more than 40 years added his synth sounds to electro-pop giants Depeche Mode, has died at age 60.

Depeche Mode announced the death of founding member Fletcher on its official social media pages, stating, "We are shocked and filled with overwhelming sadness with the untimely passing of our dear friend, family member, and bandmate Andy 'Fletch' Fletcher,"

The statement went on to say, "Fletch had a true heart of gold and was always there when you needed support, a lively conversation, a good laugh, or a cold pint".

Fletcher formed Depeche Mode in Basildon, Essex, in 1980, alongside fellow synthesizer players Vince Clarke and Martin Gore and lead singer Dave Gahan. The band went on to sell more than 100 million records worldwide, with legendary hits such as "Just Can't Get Enough", "Enjoy the Silence", and "Personal Jesus", amongst many others. And in 2020, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Singer Alison Moyet, who grew up on the same Basildon estate as Fletcher, was left speechless by the news of his death. She said: "I have just heard the news. Since we were 10. Same estate. Classmates to label mates. He who kept faith with all the old gang and they with him. It doesn't compute. Fletch. I have no words."

Fellow Eighties pop-synth band Pet Shop Boys also reacted to the news with their statement, writing: "We're saddened and shocked that Andy Fletcher of Depeche Mode has died. Fletch was a warm, friendly, and funny person who loved electronic music and could also give sensible advice about the music business."

While no cause of death was given, Rolling Stone and AP reported that the musician died of natural causes. Fletcher leaves behind a wife, Grainne, whom he was married to for almost 30 years, and two children, Megan and Joe.
