The making of 'The Lonely Night' (Reprise Version) by Moby

Moby

'The Lonely Night' was originally released as a track off Moby's 2013 album 'Innocents'. A song filled full of electronica, saccharine strings, endless loops, ambient synths, and the gravelling vocals of Mark Lanegan (former singer of influential rock band Screaming Trees).

For his upcoming record 'Reprise', Moby reworks some of his greatest hits over his distinguished three-decades-long career, including an orchestral version of 'The Lonely Night'. 'Reprise' allows Moby a chance to give some of his phenomenal work a new lease of life. And the album exhibits his desire to give his songs a stripped-back essence, as he puts it, "Using the simplicity and vulnerability you can get with acoustic or classical music."

On why he choose specifically to reprise 'The Lonely Night', Moby explained, "It was a pretty obscure song, on a pretty obscure album, but it's always been one of my favorite songs".

The remake version of the song features the legendary country singer-songwriter Kris Kristofferson. On why he reached out to Kristofferson, Moby declared, "Somehow in my mind; I thought his voice and Mark Lanegan's would work perfectly together".

In the reimagined track, the new addition of Kristofferson's tender voice combines beautifully with the more cutting Lanegan one. And the acoustic arrangement and a new orchestration written by Moby, all brought to life by the captivating backdrop of the infamous Budapest Art Orchestra, gives the track a real intimate, delicate feel.

In the recently released "The making of 'The Lonely Night' (Reprise Version) by Moby" video, he offers a fascinatingly candid insight into the construction of the track. In the video, Moby discusses the song from its origins, starting as a purely acoustic guitar song, with the later addition of piano, and then the lyrics by Mark Lanegan. Regarding the track, Moby stated, "The song is about many things, and obviously with lyrics, there is a lot of personal interpretation, but for me, the song is the dark night of the soul and the human condition."

Subsequently, it shows how Moby created the orchestration, putting it all together exquisitely. A truly must-watch that offers a captivating step-by-step guide into the composition process that is the genius of Moby.
